Methodology, sources & limits
The red POCSO layer represents reported case counts aggregated to Kerala's 14 revenue districts. It is not a map of exact incident addresses, not a prediction of personal danger, and not a ranking of residents.
Current crime data
The active dashboard uses Kerala Police public statistics. The 2026 figures are year-to-date through July, while 2023–2025 POCSO layers are complete calendar years. Do not compare a 2026 YTD number to a full-year number without accounting for the shorter period.
District mapping
Kerala Police publishes POCSO totals by police units, including City/Rural units. The app combines the City and Rural units belonging to the same revenue district. Railway Police cases are shown in statewide totals but are not assigned to a revenue district. Heat spots are anchored at district centres only for visualization.
Why other crimes may not turn the map red
For murder, theft, robbery, cybercrime, crimes against women and several other categories, the central Kerala Police statistics page provides a reliable statewide time series but not one clean, same-period 14-district table. The app therefore shows statewide trends without inventing district-level hotspots. Individual district police pages can use different update dates and table structures, so mixing them would create false precision.
Rate per 100,000
The rate toggle uses Census 2011 district population as the denominator because that is a consistent official district baseline. Crime counts are current; the population denominator is not. The rate is included for population context and is explicitly labelled. It should not be read as a 2026 demographic estimate.
Wanted-person notices and photos
Only images and details published on official Kerala Police public notice pages are bundled. A wanted notice or accusation is not a conviction. Status can change, so each card links back to the official source and should be re-verified before use. The automatic statistics updater intentionally does not auto-publish new personal profiles.
Latest news outlet
The News Outlet is a separate external-reporting layer. It queries Google News RSS for recent (normally seven-day) crime, police, cybercrime, women/child-safety, or law-and-order headlines for a selected Indian State/UT. When Kerala is selected, the user can optionally narrow the search to the currently selected Kerala district. News headlines are not merged into official Kerala Police/NCRB counts, do not create hotspot coordinates, and do not create wanted-person profiles. An allegation, arrest or report is not a conviction; users should open the publisher link for full context.
Automatic refresh
The repository includes a scheduled GitHub Actions workflow that checks Kerala Police public statistical pages, updates the machine-readable JSON data when parsable values change, and records a changelog. If a page structure changes, the updater is designed to fail rather than silently fabricate data.
